India is a land of physical differences and enjoys the most varied type of geographical extremes. On the one hand lies the majestic Himalayas in the north, covered with snow throughout the year and on the other there is the great Sahara dessert, displaying the mystical mirages to people galore. The country is surrounded by water bodies from three sides, the Bay of Bengal in the east, the Arabian Ocean in the west and the Indian Ocean in the south.

India has virtually every kind of possible landscape within its dimensions. Mountain ranges and national parks offer right opportunities for eco-tourism and trekking, the sea beaches provide ideal water sports like for scuba diving, snorkeling etc.

The northern frontier of the country is well guarded by the high and mighty Himalayan ranges. Nepal shares its boundaries with the northern regions of India, whereas, Tibet, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Burma share their boundaries with the eastern regions. On its western frontier lies Pakistan, which was once a part of India. North India begins with Jammu and Kashmir, with landscape varying from arid mountains in the far north to Srinagar and Jammu. The mountains give way to flatter plains as we move southwards and the area broadens up. This is the most fertile and heavily populated area of the country. Ganga the sacred river of Hindus flow through this terrain and make it one of the most well irrigated and fertile zone of the world.

The states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, and, central state of Madhya Pradesh comprise West India. Starting from Gujarat peninsula down to Goa, the west coast is lined with some of India's most exotic beaches. The land along the coast is fertile due to the abundant monsoon showers and therefore is the zone for rainforests. The Western Ghats separate the fertile coast from the Vindya Mountains and the dry Deccan plateau further inland.

East India begins with the states of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, which encompasses the westernmost part of the region. East India also contains an area known as the eastern triangle, which is entirely distinct. This is the last piece of land that expands beyond Bangladesh, concluding in the Naga Hills along the Burmese border.

India reaches its peninsular tip with South India, which begins with the Deccan in the north and ends with Cape Comorin. The states in South India are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala- also known as the God's own land. The southeast coast, emulating the west, also rests comfortably underneath a mountain range---the Eastern Ghats.
