13 Days Itinerary – Darjeeling / Sikkim / Bhutan

Day 01: Arrive Delhi:
Arrive Delhi by International flight. Assistance upon arrival and check-in at the hotel. Afternoon sightseeing tour of Delhi (Combined) - Capital of India, it is a juxtaposition of the old and the new. The sightseeing tour includes visit to Red Fort - built in 17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan; Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India and the last great architectural work of this great builder; walk through the dense network of narrow alleys of Chandni Chowk - the shopping centre of Old Delhi and Rajghat - the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi; Qutub Minar is the tallest stone tower in India built in 1199; India Gate - the War Memorial Arch and drive past the President’s Estate and  Parliament buildings, through Diplomatic Enclave and Connaught Place, main commercial centre of Delhi. Overnight.

Day 02: Delhi / Bagdogra / Darjeeling:

Transfer to airport to connect the flight to Bagdogra.
9W 602 Depart Delhi at 1015 hrs / Arrive Bagdogra at 1215 hrs. (Flights operates only 04 days in a  week on every Tuesday / Thursday / Saturday & Sunday).
Arrive Bagdogra and drive to Darjeeling (90 kms. approx 4 hrs drive). Assistance upon arrival and check-in at the hotel. Overnight.

Day 03: Darjeeling:

Morning sightseeing tour of Darjeeling - Once upon time the summer capital of the British, it maintains a very colonial character and today is known world over for the “Darjeeling Tea”. Places of interest include Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, previously headed by Tenzing Norgay - the first person to climb the Everest. It houses a museum which traces the prior attempts to climb the Everest and has old equipment including that used on the historic first successful climb. The zoo next to the institute has some species of the Himalayan wildlife including pandas, Siberian tiger, snow leopard etc. Visit to a tea estate and witnessing the process of making the famous tea is a must. Overnight.

Day 04:Darjeeling / Gangtok:

Morning drive to Gangtok (97 km, approx. 4 hrs), the capital and principal town of Sikkim is 1600 m. above the sea level. Situated in the eastern Himalayas, it offers excellent view of the mountains on a  clear day. Assistance upon arrival and check-in at the hotel. Overnight.

Day 05: Gangtok:

Morning visit Enchey monastery, one of the most important monastery in Sikkim. Every year in December, it is the scene of one of the most colorful festival in the state. The walls are adorned with beautiful frescoes and a diverse collection of ritual and prayer objects and masks are also on view. Also visit the Institute of Tibet logy and the Orchid sanctuary.
THE ORCHID SANCTUARY - is even more delightful and has more than 500 varieties of orchids, which flower both in the spring and in autumn. The sanctuary has meandering paths through the flower  beds, which take you from one bed of exotic orchids to another. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight.

Day 06: Gangtok / Kalimpong:

Morning excursion to the famous Rumtek Monastery rebuilt in the 1960s as the headquarter of the Kagyupa school.
Then drive to Kalimpong. Arrive Kalimpong and check-in at the hotel. Evening visit Monastery, belonging to the Gelugpa school of Dalai Lama. Also visit the Bhutanese Monastery and one of the flower nurseries. Kalimpong is famous for. Overnight.

Day 07: Kalimpong / Phuntsholing:

Morning drive to Phuntsholing (The gateway of Bhutan). After completing the visa formalities at the India / Bhutan border drive to Phuntsholing. Phuntsholing – lies directly at the base of Himalayan  foothills and this small town is Bhutan’s commercial centre holding most of commercial organizations. Assistance arrival and check-in the hotel. Overnight.

Day 08: Phuntsholing / Thimphu:

Morning proceed to Thimphu. Visit to kharbandi, the beautiful monastery built by Royal Grandmother Ashi Phuntsho Choedron and situated in garden of tropical plants, flowers. From the monastery garden there is a beautiful view over the plains and town of Phuntsholing. Road further climbs steeply and winds in innumerable bends, upwards to an alt. of approximately 2,000m. You should occasionally stop on the way so as not to miss the magnificent view of the Brahmaputra plains and the Toorsa River. After two hours drive through light mountain jungle, displaying lianas and orchids, the first ridge has been passed and the road descends slightly. The scenery and vegetation changes and en route you pass Chukha Hydel project and the small town of Chimakothi. Near Chapcha the road reaches its highest point approximately 2,800m. Now it goes steeply down and alomg the Wang Chu till the Chuzom (confluence). Shortly before entering Thimphu city, visit to Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortresses of the Kingdom built by Shabdrung Ngwang Namgyal in 1627. Overnight.

Day 09: Thimphu:

Morning sightseeing tour of Thimphu – Once a rustic village, Thimphu today is the capital of Bhutan, sitting in broad fertile valley of Wang Chu River. Thimphu most impressive building is Tashichhodzong, the home of National Assembly known as “fortress of the glorious religion”. Originally built in 1627 by  Shabdrung Ngwang Namgyal, it was the country’s first official centre of social and religious education. Memorial Chorten  is town’s another landmark, built in the memory of the Late King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck who is popularly regarded as Father of modern Bhutan. Afternoon sightseeing tour of Art School which is experience gratifying and where the traditional Bhutanese Arts are taught. Also visit the National Library which houses vast collection of manuscripts and texts related with Buddhist studies. The other places of interest are: Traditional Medicine Institute where centuries old healing arts still practiced, Handicrafts Emporium which displays wide assortment of, beautifully hand-woven and crafted products, the textile and folk heritage museum. Evening take a stroll through Thimphu’s market area visiting local shops and mingling with people. Overnight.

Day 10: Thimphu / Paro:

Morning drive to Paro (3 hrs drive). Assistance upon arrival and check-in at the hotel. Afternoon day at leisure. Overnight.

Day 11: Paro:

Morning sightseeing tour of Paro – This beautiful valley, where nature and man conjured to create  their dearest image is home to some of Bhutan’s oldest temples, monasteries, the national museum and country’s only airport. Situated strategically and commanding spectacular view of valley, Rinpung Dzong meaning “Fortress of the heap of jewels” was built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646. It now houses Paro monastic school and office of civil administration. It is also the venue of Paro Tshechu (festival) held once a year in spring. Above Rinpung Dzong is Ta Dzong or national museum, which has vast collection of Bhutanese art, artifacts, weapons, stamps and wild life. A short drive north overlooking Paro river is Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred shrines of Bhutan, dating from the introduction of Buddhism. Further ahead, at  the end of valley lies Drukgyel dzong, a symbol of all the unsuccessful attemps armies from north made on Bhutan in the early past. The Dzong, built by Shabdrung commemorates early victory. Overnight.

Day 12: Paro / Delhi:

Transfer to airport in time to connect the flight to Delhi.
KB 204 Depart Paro at 1040 hrs / Arrive Delhi at 1415 hrs. (Flight operates only 3 days in a week on every Wednesday / Thursday / Friday).
Assistance upon arrival and check-in at the hotel. Overnight.

Day 13: Depart Delhi:

Transfer to International airport in time to connect the flight to onward destination.
